Prevalence of Ragging in Varsities and Colleges up by 70%

The prevalence of ragging is high in institutes across the country this year. So far, 889 ragging cases were registered in the year 2017, which is quite high as compared to the previous years. Even though UGC and educational institutes are taking extreme measures to curb ragging menace, it is still prevalent in many institutes across the country. Among the states, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 138 ragging cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh. Among the educational institutes, the Government Polytechnic College, located in Kanpur registered 17 cases.

The Principal of Government Polytechnic College, Mr. Rajkumar Singh argued that they had received only six ragging complaints this year. The anti-ragging committee of the college took steps to take action against the students indulged in ragging. The management suspended two students for one month and allowed them to resume classes after a comprehensive review. In most cases, students filed a case to settle issues with other students over a dispute. Apart from these, there were no instances of ragging on the campus, the principal of the college clarified.

West Bengal is another state where ragging cases have been increased from 50 to 92 since 2012. Banaras Hindu University and Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MNIT) registered 36 and 31 ragging cases respectively.

An official associated with UGC pointed that parents and students are more confident and report instances of ragging in educational institutes. This is the reason for the increase of ragging cases in 2017. Earlier, they were reluctant, and the number of cases that came into the limelight was less. Now, students and parents feel confident that the people who involved in ragging will be punished with an immediate effect, he added.
