Colleges in Rajasthan have witnessed a significant rise in the enrolment of girl students during the academic session 2016-17. Girls outnumbered boys in many colleges across the state, which is a positive aspect in terms of female literacy. According to the official data disclosed by the Department of Higher Education, 4.67 lakh girls enrolled in higher learning institutes against 4.65 lakh boys enrolled in these institutes. Compared to the previous academic years, the female strength in colleges across the state for the academic session 2016-17 has increased by 23.67 percent.
During the academic session 2015-16, over 7.52 lakh students enrolled in colleges out of which 3.82 lakh were boys and 3.70 lakh were girls. The enrolment of female students in colleges had increased by 7.8% in 2015-16 compared to 2005-06.

However, 2016-17 recorded the highest enrolment of female students in colleges with 101 girls for every 100 boys. The data clearly indicates the positive approach towards female education and increase in the number of opportunities in the Rajasthan state.
Among the streams, Arts recorded the highest enrolment of female students with 34 percent followed by Science with 21.07 percent.
Despite the varied efforts made by the Indian government to promote female education, many backward or rural villages in India are still bound to traditions and customs that do not allow a girl to study beyond Class VIII or Class X.

Due to the increasing opportunities for women in education and employment, states across the country have been recording exceptional growth in terms of female literacy rate.
