The alumni and faculties from IIMs have showcased their dissatisfaction over IIMA’s decision of not including ST and SC Quota.IIM Bangalore alumni pointed out that this is also against the law and misuse of Autonomy.

Reservation in IIM Ahmedabad PhD Course

The Indian Institute of Management - IIM Ahmedabad chooses not to introduce any reservations in Ph.D level for the SC/ST students. Despite many requests for many years to introduce quota in research studies, IIM Ahmedabad 2020 Ph.D Programme in Management will still continue with the admission procedure wholly on the basis of merit and general eligibility. This came to light when the leading b-school in India opened their admission portal for 2020 session in research-based Ph.D course in Management. The application portal did not have an option to apply under any government proposed quota of marginalised groups or economically weaker sections.

The law implies on all central universities that they will have to reserve some percentage of total seats for backward communities. The alumni of the institute are now calling out to the institute against its continuous refusal to reserve seats for backward classes. An alumnus of IIM Bangalore Siddharth Joshi has written an open letter to Erol D’Souza, the director of IIM Ahmedabad along with IIM Bangalore professor Deepak Malghan on Wednesday, 18th September. He explained in the letter that the IIM Act 2017 allowed IIMs to conduct ingenious Ph.D researches and gave an unprecedented amount of autonomy which is not there for any other central educational institutes. But the law also says that the IIMs will have to follow the provisions chalked out for the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act of 2006 which directs the central government institutes to have seats reserved for backward classes.

The student-professor pair of Indian Institute of Management - IIM Bangalore pointed out that there is a crisis in the number of faculties in all the IIMs in India who belong from ST or SC community. The duo wrote in the letter that only 4 out of 500 faculty network of IIMs across India only belong from SC and ST community. They also pointed out that 1/4th of the IIM faculties are graduates from IIMs doctoral programmes itself.

It is important to address the unreasonable lack of diversity in the IIM Faculty network all over India. If IIM Ahmedabad proceeds with their imprudence, it will make the process more difficult as concerned by the IIMB Duo.
