Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has been the subject of controversy after the question paper of an exam was leaked at the Modern Education Society’s College of Engineering (MES CoE) . The news broke out on Friday, December 9, 2016, but the college administration is unwilling to file an FIR in this regard. Administration of SPPU will call a special meeting of the board of examinations on Tuesday, December 13, 2016, to discuss the issue.

It was revealed on Friday that students had accessed the exam paper on their smartphones. One of the faculty members of MES CoE found out about the matter an hour before the exam was about to begin. The college and university have remained silent on the matter.

SPPU Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, Wasudeo Gade saidt that the meeting has been called mainly to discuss the paper leak. He further added that the college has no option other than filing an FIR and that instructions have been issued to the college and strict action will be taken if the college fails to follow the rules.

Apart from the Vice-chancellor, other senior officials of the examination department and engineering faculty co-ordinators will also be attending the meeting. Reluctance in filing an FIR has raised a lot of questions on the university. It is also being said that the question paper might have been leaked in multiple colleges as the students of MES CoE who were caught with question papers in their mobile phones said that they got the question paper from another college.

A senior official at SPPU explained the delay in filing an FIR and said that an incident like this is taken up by an Unfair Means Committee before reporting it. The committee calls the accused students and questions them. The faculty members related to the matter are also called by the committee and are questioned. The committee tries to reach the root of the matter before filing a report. The official further added that since all this will take a lot of time, the report should have been filed by now.
