Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Mr. N R Karmalkar hoped that the varsity will find a spot in the MHRD’s list of top 20 universities. Expressing his views on the performance of the University in the rankings, Mr. Karmalkar pointed that the varsity performed well in international rankings. According to him, the rankings must depend on the progress of students instead of the number of Ph.Ds. The ranking system must also include the growth of the student in his/ her career after leaving the varsity. He also suggested the HRD Ministry on the same.

Giving details about the performance of the varsity in terms of research, Mr. Karmalkar pointed that research scholars have started journals and publishing research papers to maintain good Annual Performance Index (API). However, MHRD has recently announced that the publications made by research scholars are no longer linked to Annual Performance Index. Therefore, the varsity witnessed a slight dip in terms of research output. Pune University maintains specific guidelines to maintain quality research. Even though the varsity had not published its work in top journals, the performance in terms of research is better, he added.

Speaking about the number of patents filed by the varsity, Mr. Karmalkar indicated that much emphasis was not given to patents earlier. Therefore, people did not bother about it. Now, the varsity is taking steps to encourage filing patents through the IPR Cell.
Giving reasons for the delay in constituting the statutory bodies, Mr. Karmalkar revealed that the procedures were not properly defined in Maharashtra Public Universities Act. The varsity came across certain rules during the electoral rolls.
Mr. Karmalkar also indicated that the performance of the varsity in NAAC and NIRF will place the varsity in the list of top 20 universities of MHRD. If the varsity gets world class status, it will get complete autonomy in all aspects with little intervention from the state government.
