Students of IIT Patna Win Third Prize at International Mechanical Engineering Event

At the recent innovative competition organised at Jaipur by American Society of Mechanical Engineers, IIT Patna Alacrity team won the third position and a cash prize.
Students of IIT Patna Win Third Prize at International Mechanical Engineering Event

At the recent innovative competition organised in Jaipur from 3 rd March to 5 th March 2017 by American Society of Mechanical Engineers, IIT Patna Alacrity team won the third position and a cash prize of INR 20,000.

The annual international event saw the participation of students from different institutes. 41 teams participated in the event this year. These teams were selected from 61 different teams that had applied for participation in the event. The competition was held on different aspects like innovation, design, endurance and speed for both male and female sections.

A third-year mechanical engineering student of the IIT Patna, Dharmesh Kumar Dewangan said that it took them around 45 days to design their human powered bicycle for the competition. They are now very excited as their efforts have not gone in vain.

Dharmesh's team manufactured a light-weight, efficient and a very dexterous semi-recumbent vehicle that can be effectively and safely be used for everyday transportation. The vehicle, which costs INR 10,000 was sponsored by the Research and Development Wing of IIT Patna. The team was headed by Abhishek Singh as the captain and Atul Thakur was its mentor.

Zeeshan Alam, another team member said that the vehicle has a Smart Automatic Gear Changing (SAGC) system. It will be controlled by a smartphone attached to it.

The students have also developed a new App called Alacrity SAGC for this purpose. The vehicle is equipped with several innovative features such as Aerodynamic Fairing, Rollover Protection System and 7x3 Gear System.

The other members of the team were Karan Gupta, Chandan Gupta, Ashish Kumar, Avinash Kumar, Amrit Raj, Chaitanya Kumar, Sarthak Rastogi, Shiv Jee and Shashank Kumar.
