From 2020-21, IITs will have 20% of seats for female students under supernumerary quota. The idea is to increase female enrollment in IITs.
It is good news for female students who are aspiring to study at premier institutes of India, i.e., Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Aspirants, female students have 20% reservation in admissions, and an additional 20% seats will be created under supernumerary quota. The additional 20% additional supernumerary seats will not have any effect on the existing 20% seats for female candidates reserved at IITs. A separate merit list will be created for female students through which flexibility will be created to choose the better campus.
Last year, the reservation for female candidates for admission in IITs was 17%, and the same was 14% in 2018. In order to encourage more female candidates to prefer IITs for B.Tech admission, the government is coming up with various ideas such as increasing the number of seats for women candidates and increasing reservation percentage for the same.
According to an observation made by a committee headed by IIT Mandi Director, the number of female students qualifying for admission in IITs has been lesser than boys. Usually, most girl students prefer to choose an engineering college close to their home rather than taking admission in IITs. On the other hand, a girl is yet to top the JEE Advanced exam. Even after implementing reservation in 2018, none of the girl students made it to the top ranks of JEE Advanced, the committee explained.
At IITs, 10% of supernumerary seats are reserved for foreign nationals, and a total number of 1100 seats are reserved for international students across all IIT campuses in India.
