Supreme Court Rejects Plea on Justice Lodha Panel

The Supreme Court rejected a plea on Justice Lodha Panel headed by former Chief Justice of India, Mr. Lodha . The plea alleged that the oversight panel appointed by the apex court had gone beyond monitoring its work and allowed several medical colleges to admit the students. However, a bench comprising Justices A R Dave and L Nageswara Rao severely criticised this contention. The plea was filed by Mr. Anand Rai , a doctor. He had a tough time in the court where the bench quizzed him to ascertain his bonafide as the petitioner.

Earlier, a constitutional bench had invoked extraordinary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to set up a three-member oversight committee to monitor the work of Medical Council of India. It has been alleged that the panel gave permission to most of the medical colleges to admit students. The panel neither conducted any inspection nor took advice from MCI and Health Ministry. The colleges were given permissions to increase the intake of the students. The Lodha panel even extended the scheduled date to remove the deficiencies in the colleges.

The plea filed by Mr. Anand Rai stated that the impugned decisions taken by Lodha Panel would spoil the quality of medical education in India and will have an adverse impact on the students’ career in the field of Medicine.

The Supreme Court rejected the plea and supported the steps taken by Lodha Panel. Mr. Anand Rai broke down in the courtroom after hearing the verdict of the apex court.
