89,000 Engineering Seats Vacant in Tamil Nadu

Only 52 per cent of seats are filled for B.Tech undergraduate program at the end of the counselling process this year. DoTE organized four rounds of the counselling process in order to fill 1.73 lakh engineering seats in Tamil Nadu. But despite their efforts, Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) managed to fill only 83,296 seats. Engineering seats of 479 colleges still remain vacant.

June, this year, Anna University instructed to reduce the number of seats due to lack of proper infrastructure facilities in colleges. However, in an inspection conducted by a committee which comprised of a faculty member from IISC Bengaluru , IIT Madras , and NIT Trichy it was found that 537 education institutions were not following the guidelines set by Anna University.

Dean of a popular engineering college in Chennai said to a leading newspaper that a lot of private engineering colleges are opened by the wealthy people and the politicians. However, these colleges do not have proper facilities and placements. He added that education is not seen as a service but as a business nowadays and candidates applying for engineering course opts for top 100 engineering colleges. He sighed that 600 engineering colleges are active in Tamil Nadu hence, most of the seats of these colleges remain vacant or these colleges function with a small number of students. He added lastly that quality of education should be maintained and these colleges should be shut down.

A prominent educationist, Prince Gajendra Babu said that very few colleges provide 100 percent placements and the placements not good hence, the seats are vacant.

The former principal of Gudiyatham Government Arts & Science College, Siva Kumar said that the government should decide the number of engineering institution that should be there in Tamil Nadu. He also added that strict action should be taken against the colleges which do not have proper faculty.

This crisis marks the dark age in the education sector of Tamil Nadu. Candidates should be very selective while opting for colleges for higher studies.
