Responding to a question in state assembly of Tamil Nadu, the government pointed that it has not received any clarification or reply from the central government on the Presidential assent to NEET bills. In February 2017, the state Assembly passed two bills exempting the state from NEET examination for the admission to medical and dental courses. Health Minister of State, Mr. Vijayabaskar said that the state government is expecting a positive response from the centre.

Ever since CBSE declared the notification for NEET 2017 examination, the state government of Tamil Nadu had been requesting the Centre to exempt the state from NEET examination. In January 2017, the state government indicated that students from Tamil Nadu were not ready to take CBSE-centric NEET examination. Later, the state Assembly passed two bills restraining itself from NEET examination. Even the opposition parties in Tamil Nadu supported the move taken by the state government. However, the legislations passed by the state government will become valid only if President of India approves it.

Currently, the NEET bills passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly are with Ministry of Home Affairs. Mr. Vijayabaskar indicated that the state government could approach the court if the centre rejects the bills.
The state government of Tamil Nadu wanted to restrain itself from NEET examination due to the centralised process of admission. The state reservation rules will not apply for the admission to medical and dental courses. Simply, reserved category students from Tamil Nadu will not enjoy the benefit of state’s 69% reservation rule. Centre allows only 49.5% quota through the centralised admission process.
M.K. Stalin commented that different states have varied needs and students from all the states could not appear for a common entrance test.
Earlier, JP Nadda, Union Health Minister clarified that the state government had complete freedom to provide reservation to rural students.
CBSE is expected to declare the results of NEET-UG 2017 examination next week.
