Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Join National Pool of NEET

  • The central government has granted the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh exemption from Article 317D.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will contribute 15% of MBBS seats to the national pool and the native students will be able to apply for 15% of the national seats.
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Join National Pool of NEET

The governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have decided to enter the national pool of NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) with an objective to ensure that a massive number of MBBS and PG seats will be available for students from 2018. The central government has granted exemption from Article 317D to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Under this scheme, Telangana will contribute 15% of MBBS merit seats to the national pool. In return, Telangana students will have the opportunity to avail 15% seats of the national pool. With this move, the number of merit seats in Telangana under convenor quota will be up from 2,075 to 4,468. Similarly, the number of PG medical seats will be increased from 1,475 to 7,647.

The total number of medical seats available in Telangana is 3,150, and 2,075 seats among them come under convenor quota. The total number of medical seats available under the national quota is 27,710.

In case of Andhra Pradesh, medical aspirants will contest for 4,482 seats through NEET. Similarly, the total number of PG medical seats available in Andhra Pradesh is 660. If the state government contributes 330 PG seats to the national pool, students will have a chance to compete for 7,236 seats national wide.

Expressing his views on the move, Dean of Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Mr. Kumar Veeramulu explained that it is a boon for the students of both Telugu states to enter into the national pool. If both the states contribute 400 medicals MBBS seats, students will get access to over 4,000 seats. He further mentioned that these seats are in the government sector that includes some of the top colleges.
