Students of Tata Institute of Social Sciences received a list of dues to pay instead of their degrees. Sandeep Gupta, TISS Student was to graduate from the Institute on 8 May 2018 but in the place of his LL.M degree, he received a list of dues to be paid to the administration. He was supposed to participate in the convocation ceremony of the institute but many of his batchmates from the LL.M and Masters of Philosophy have found themselves in this situation.
As per the students, TISS fee structure is anyway higher than other public funded institutions and these dues will make it harder for students from marginalized section to receive education at the institute.

But the TISS administration said the practices adopted by the institute are similar to those of many national and international universities. Students need to pay the fees and clear their due to receive the degree. TISS officials further added that the institute has no interest in holding back their degree and they will be handed over to the students once outstanding dues are cleared by them.

TISS students are already protesting against the institute’s move to charge GOI PMS-Government of India Post- Matric Scholarship , hostel fees etc. Students are of the view that hostel and dining charges are inclusive under the GOI-PMS scheme. However, the institute is against this as they have been bearing the expenses for students since many years.
