TN Delegation Meets PM Modi and Union Ministers Seeking Exemption from NEET

A delegation comprising ministers of Tamil Nadu met PM Modi and other union ministers seeking exemption from NEET . The delegation urged the union ministers to push the matter further. The state government of Tamil Nadu has been seeking exemption from NEET since February 2017. However, the state government does not have final authority to take the decision on the matter.

The legislations passed by the state government to exempt its students from NEET must get the approval of the President of India. At present, the legislations passed by the state government are under review/consideration. They indicate that the state government could continue the admission process for UG medical courses based on Class 12 marks.

The objective of the state government is to protect the interests of students. Mandatory implementation of NEET examination has shattered the dreams of medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu specifically from rural areas. The state government follows state board syllabus which is why a majority of the students did not perform well in the NEET examination as most of the questions were based on CBSE syllabus. On the other hand, the state board syllabus is entirely different from CBSE.

The admission process for medical courses in Tamil Nadu has not commenced yet.
