TN Govt.’s Decision to Reserve 85% Medical Seats to Students of State Board Challenged in HC

Recently, the government of Tamil Nadu announced that it would reserve 85% of MBBS/ BDS seats to the candidates of state education board. However, the state government will give only 15% preference to the candidates of CBSE board. The decision of Tamil Nadu government on the reservation of 85% MBBS/ BDS seats to state board students was challenged in the High Court of Madras. A section of CBSE students has filed a writ petition against the reservation policy of state government. The court took up the matter for hearing on June 29, 2017, during the forenoon session. Official information on proceedings of the court on the petition will be out shortly.

CBSE students filed a petition through Advocate Murali Krishnan, and the petition sought to roll back the ordinance issued by the government on June 22, 2017, regarding the reservation policy. CBSE expressed disappointment with a limited number of seats in MBBS/ BDS courses.

According to sources, the state government took the decision to provide 85% reservation to state board students considering the number of students who appeared for Class 12 examinations. Around 4.4 lakh students appeared for Class 12 examinations under Tamil Nadu State Education Board. On the other hand, only 4,220 students appeared for Class 12 exams under Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE. Therefore, the state government gave more preference to the majority group.

The other reason was syllabus of NEET-UG 2017 examination. Most of the questions in NEET-UG 2017 examination were based on CBSE syllabus. With an objective to facilitate more students to get admission into medical courses, the state government implemented 85% reservation to state board students.
