Chennai colleges flooded with B.Com applications for 2019-20 academic year surpassing the popularity of Engineering. Applications are also being received in Visual Arts and Basic science courses too.

Huge Demand for B.Com Courses in Chennai

The flurry of applications for B.Com courses in Chennai Colleges has suggested that the students’ focus has been shifted from engineering courses to Commerce in Chennai. Generally, after completing 12th, students prefer to take up engineering as a career option. But the reported flood of applications for B.com in Chennai is suggesting that the trends are changing.

Loyola College , which is a highly popular college in Chennai has informed that they have received 17,403 applications in total and most of them are for B.Com rather than Science and Arts. The second most popular course in Loyola College with the highest application numbers is ‘Visual Communication.’

Andrew Francis, the principal of Loyola College spoke about the incident by comparing the situation of what it was 5 years ago. He informed, 5 years ago, colleges were being compelled to shut down most of their courses like B.Com and Fine/Visual Arts facing the huge popularity for engineering courses. This will give new life to the basic science, commerce and arts/humanities colleges. He said that B.Com course has larger job opportunities than all other courses.

The principal of Ethiraj College for Women in Chennai, S. Kothai informed that a total of 4,000 applications for B.Com courses have been received by the college in 2019 among 15,000 total applications.

Lalitha Balakrishnan, who is the principal of MOP Vaishnav College in Chennai, has said the college has so far received 17,000 applications for B.Com courses where the sanctioned number of seats for B.com in MOP Vaishnav College is only 1,300. The same tone was heard in the statement of Ravanan, Principal of Presidency College, Chennai. He said that 5,000 forms were sold within two days where the total number of forms distributed in 2018 was 10,000. Presidency College, Chennai who secured 3rd rank in NIRF is now expecting students from North-Eastern states also. The admission in this college will be based on cutoffs except for Engish, Tamil, and other language courses.
