UGC Makes Amendments in Foreign Ph.D. Degree Equivalency Rules

According to UGC, any foreign Ph.D. degree which is held equivalent by AIU will be exempted from the NET exam. At the same time, Ph.D. holders from top 50 universities across the country are eligible for direct appointment for the post of Assistant Professor in universities.

UGC Makes Amendments in Foreign Ph.D. Degree Equivalency Rules

University Grants Commission (UGC) has made several changes in its rules related to the equivalency of foreign Ph.D. degree with Indian Ph.D. degree. According to the new UGC regulations, any Ph.D. degree which is held equivalent by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and its procedure, may be exempted from the NET exam which is conducted for the posts of Assistant Professor in various Indian colleges and universities.

At the same time, Ph.D. degree holders from top 500 international universities across the globe are eligible for direct recruitment for the post of Assistant Professor in Indian Universities.

As per the old regulations of University Grants Commission (UGC) , if the M.Phil/Ph.D. degree is awarded by a foreign university, in such cases the Indian institution can consider the norms laid down by the Standing Committee constituted by the respective institution for determining the equivalence of the degree awarded by the foreign university.

UGC has been receiving several queries from stakeholders regarding the procedure of equivalence of a Ph.D. degree from foreign universities to a Ph.D. degree awarded by Indian universities for the post of Assistant Professor in Indian colleges and universities.

UGC also clarifies that the universities can make use of the latest provision for determining the validity of Ph.D. degrees awarded by foreign universities for exemption from NET (National Eligibility Test).

Apart from this, in one of the latest developments, UGC has formed a committee to improve the examination system in the country. The committee will invite suggestions regarding the same from students, faculty, stakeholders, and administration for improvement in the examination system in higher education.
