A notice has been issued by University Grants Commission on November 29, 2016, indicating that all the college principals are eligible to serve one more term after the completion of five-year tenure and the appointment must be made after due selection.
UGC Amends Regulations, One More Term for College Principals

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has amended the regulations regarding the term of college principals and revealed that the college principals could serve one more term after the completion of his/her five-year term.

A notice has been issued by University Grants Commission on November 29, 2016, indicating that all the college principals are eligible to serve one more term after the completion of five-year tenure and the appointment must be made after the due selection process. Review and recommendations of external peer committee must be taken into consideration while confirming the appointment. UGC will specify a certain framework for the external peer committee.

The regulations which were made by UGC in the year 2010 regarding appointments of academic staff to colleges and universities have been amended, and the principals are made eligible to serve one more term.

UGC Secretary Jaspal Sandhu indicated that the decision was taken in a meeting which was held on November 15, 2016. The commission decided to constitute an external peer committee for the re-appointment. The peer committee includes Vice-Chancellor of affiliating University and Chairman of UGC as the nominee.

Recently, UGC has also issued a directive to all the universities and colleges to conduct an awareness campaign on online transactions among the students. The varsities and affiliating colleges shall run campaigns from December 12, 2016, and must continue for one month. UGC also indicated that all the universities and colleges must go cashless by adopting digital payments or transactions.
