SIES College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College of Arts , Science and Commerce, Mumbai University have been granted autonomy status by University Grants Commission (UGC). The autonomy status provides these colleges to design their own curriculum , introduce new courses, redesign the programmes and declare their own results, and make amendments in the existing examination pattern.
UGC has granted both the colleges autonomous status till 2027-28 academic year. But the colleges can apply for the autonomous status six months prior to the expiry of their autonomous cycle.

According to the criteria mentioned by UGC, colleges and educational institutes with A ranking in National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and 3.51 CGPA are eligible to apply for the autonomous status. Both RJC and SIES colleges have been granted autonomy with NAAC A grade ranking. Both the colleges have a good reputation in Mumbai as they offer good quality education and hold reputation among students.

Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College has been granted huge funds for research projects from various organisations such as Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Medical Research, and Hindustan Unilever. SIES was also granted Rs. 95 lakh for Science and Technology Department in the 2017-18 academic session. Earlier there were only 14 colleges in Mumbai University that were granted full autonomy by UGC, but with the addition of SIES and RJC the number has gone up to 16.
