With an aim to inculcate eco-friendly practices among universities and colleges across the country, the UGC (University Grants Commission) has asked the universities to use recycled papers for different purposes and play a vital role in saving the environment. The UGC advised the varsities not to demand different kinds of papers for various purposes like tenders, letters, etc.
Usually, universities in India insist on paper, which is made of wood, virgin pulp, agro-based pulp and bamboo pulp in tenders for the procurement of printing paper. Such insistence will eventually increase the load on the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to focus the shift to eco-friendly goods. UGC has advised the universities to take steps for protecting the environment and reduce the load on the environment by using recycled papers.
Apart from the above initiative, universities can also conduct various campaigns to protect the environment and limit the wastage of paper. Events like poster presentation, elocution, street plays, easy writing, and awareness campaigns can be conducted to enlighten people on the effects of deforestation.
Excessive deforestation is leading to unexpected climatic changes across the country. In recent years, the effects of global warming have increased. Therefore, it is time to encourage afforestation by limiting the cutting of trees. Using recycled papers is a significant move towards discouraging excessive deforestation.
