UGC Introduces New Eligibility Rules for Deemed University Status

The Indian Universities will now have to surpass additional eligibility criteria if they wish to get the status of Deemed University from the Central Government. The status of gaining autonomy granted by the Centre will include more qualifying stages which will be defined by the UGC under the guidance of the Centre. The decision has been taken by UGC (University Grants Commission) as a step to improve the availability of employment opportunities and learning process for the students in the universities.

As of now, there are 130 universities that have gained the Deemed status after clearing all the norms specified by UGC. Being a Deemed University allows them to decide on their fee structure and admission procedure. After the declaration of the new prescribed guidelines, a university will gain the status if they fulfill the pointers mentioned below.

  • It is important for the applying institution to be in operational condition for at least 20 years or more if they wish to gain autonomy.

  • Having at least 2,000 students and 100 professors or teachers per academic year is also a must for the Deemed status.

  • A minimum of 1:20 teacher-student ratio is a must for autonomy.

  • 1/3rd of the total students in the institution must pursue postgraduate or research courses.

  • 30 square meters for each student is also to be implemented by the applying institution.

  • The institutions will also have to prepare an affidavit stating the approved and confirmed seats of each offered courses, the total number of students taken admission, admission policy, fee structure and details of the faculties along with their designated qualifications and post it on their official website.
