The University Grants Commission has decided to increase the Honorarium for Guest Faculty by Rs.1,500 per lecture subject to a maximum of Rs. 50,000 per month. UGC confirmed about the decision in a letter to the registrars of all the universities.
Earlier to this, the Honorarium for the Guest Faculty per lecture was Rs.1,000 and maximum in a month was Rs. 25,000.
UGC further confirmed that the Guest Faculty can be appointed the sanctioned post. Also, the qualification for Guest Faculty has to be the same as per the norms of Assistant Professors of Universities/Colleges in UGC Regulations. Also, the selection process for appointing the Guest Faculty in the higher educational institutes will be the same as the one for appointing Regular Assistant Professors.

It further informed that Guest Faculty will not be treated like regular teachers in the varsity/college. They will not have the voting right and can neither become the members of various statutory bodies of the university. They will also not get any benefits such as leaves, pension, gratuity, allowances and others like other regular teachers. As per the official letter of the UGC, these guidelines will be implemented immediately.

One of the officials from a teacher organisation said that they are happy with the increase in the total pay in the monthly salary although their demand was of Rs. 65,000 for a teacher. However, the per lecture Honorarium should have been more, she added.
