The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a high-level Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) for shortlisting the institutes that have applied for IoE tag. The EEC will short 20 institutes out of 103 that applied for world-class status. The committee comprises of top Indian and international academicians. On February 21, 2018, UGC officially announced the members of four-member EEC.

Members of UGC’s EEC: -
- Former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Mr. N Gopalaswami. He is the Chairperson of EEC.
- Chancellor of the University of Houston System, Renu Khator
- Former Director of MDI Gurgaon and IIM Lucknow , Pritam Singh
- Professor at Harvard Business School, Professor Tarun Khanna
The EEC will visit all the 103 institutions that applied for IoE tag. The committee will assess the institutes based on the parameters and guidelines prescribed by UGC. Rankings and performance of institutes in national and international rankings will be taken into consideration while selecting the institutes. After assessing all the institutes, EEC will submit the report to the central government. After the thorough scrutiny, the government will announce the names of selected institutions in April 2018.

Institutes seeking IoE tag can submit the applications by February 22, 2018 (deadline extended from February 15, 2018). If everything materialises as per the plan of government, India will have 10 public and 10 private world-class institutes by April 2018.
