Union Cabinet Approves National Rail and Transportation University (NRTU) at Vadodara

Union Cabinet Approves National Rail and Transportation University (NRTU) at Vadodara

On December 20, 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the setting up of National Rail and Transportation University (NRTU) in Vadodara. Finally, the dream of Ministry of Railways to set up NRTU has taken form after the approval of Union Cabinet. NRTU will be the first university in India, which will focus on skill development and capacity building initiatives in railways and transportation sectors. NRTU will play a significant role in transforming rail and transport sector towards New India.

As per UGC Regulations, NRTU will be established as a deemed institute under the de novo category. According to sources, the government is aiming to complete all the formalities relating to the approval of NRTU by April 2018. If everything materialises as per plan, the first academic programme will be launched at NRTU in July 2018.

Under Section 8 of Companies Act 2013, the Ministry of Railways will create a not-for-profit company that shall be the Managing Company of NRTU. The company will provide required infrastructural and financial support to the varsity. The company will also have the power to appoint the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of NRTU. The varsity will have a Board of Management, which will be independent of the Managing Company. The Board of Management will have complete autonomy to perform its administrative and academic responsibilities.

The government will utilise the existing infrastructure and land at NAIR (National Academy of Indian Railways) at Vadodara for the creation of NRTU. The existing campus will be modernized for the purpose of the varsity. Ministry of Railways will fund the university in all aspects. According to sources, NRTU will enrol 3,000 full-time students.

NRTU will play a crucial role in creating a resource pool of skilled workforce and, utilising the latest technology to provide better speed, safety and service in Indian Railways. NRTU will also generate lucrative employment opportunities and it will emerge as a global centre of expertise.
