UPES Dehradun Students Win Global Aerospace Competition – CanSAT 2017

UPES Dehradun Students Win Global Aerospace Competition – CanSAT 2017

Students of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies or UPES have made the nation proud by winning the Global Aerospace Competition, i.e., CanSAT 2017. The event took place in Texas (US), and the students of UPES bagged the top spot in the competition. Team Astral consists of 23 students took part in the competition and competed with 39 teams across the world. In the year 2016, the astral team bagged the fourth position in the competition, and this year, they emerged as winners of the competition by securing the first position.

The competition witnessed the participation from various prestigious universities like VIT University, Manchester University, Princeton University and the University of California. Team Astral from UPES bagged the top spot under the mentorship of Dr. Zozimus Labana and Dr. Ugur Guven.

Praising the students, Dr. Guven revealed that the achievement of UPES students in CatSAT parallels the recent success of Indian space programmers. The competition helps the students to prepare themselves for roles in the aerospace sector. These students will have a bright career if they join the aerospace sector.

Team Astral has been participating in the competition since 2013. It consists of students from Aerospace Engineering , Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Material Science Engineering , Computer Science Engineering , Electronics Engineering and Design studies.

CatSAT 2017 is a competition organised by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and American Astronautical Society (AAS). CatSAT is an annual design-build-fly competition that focuses on space-related themes. The competition tests students’ collaborative, problem-solving, decision making, creative and analytical skills.
