On September 1, 2017, thousands of engineering students from various colleges affiliated to VTU staged a protest against the mismanaged examination system of the varsity. Students have demanded the varsity to scrap critical year back and year back provision for the Non-CBCS (Choice Based Credit System).

Under the year back provision, students need to repeat a year if they fail in four or more subjects. Under the critical year provision, students will be allowed to pursue the third year unless they clear all the papers in the first year. In the same way, students will not be allowed to pursue final year unless they clear all the papers in the second year.

During the protest, students complained that they were forced pay the examination fee for the next semester even before the results of current semester are announced. Students further pointed that the varsity released the results of re-evaluation at midnight, just a few hours before the examination. Engineering students along with some student organisations called for a state-wide bandh on September 1, 2017, against the faulty examination system of VTU.
