West Bengal Cabinet Approves Four New Universities

West Bengal government will set up four new state universities for which it has received an approval from the state Cabinet. The new state universities will provide more opportunities for students to access higher education in their respective districts or locations.

West Bengal Cabinet Approves Four New Universities

On July 27, 2018, the Cabinet of West Bengal gave its consent for setting up four new universities in the state. Education Minister of West Bengal, Mr. Partha Chatterjee gave the official clarification in this regard. The state government will run the four new universities approved by the Cabinet which will come up in the following districts of West Bengal: -

  • Murshidabad
  • South Dinajpur
  • Alipurduar
  • Jalpaiguri

Mr. Partha Chatterjee also revealed that Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee would lay the foundation stone for Mahatma Gandhi University to be set up in East Midnapore on October 02, 2018. With the establishment of five new universities, the number of universities in West Bengal will go up to 28.

The Cabinet of West Bengal has assigned the responsibility of identification of land for setting up four new universities to the District Magistrate and Education Department.

The new state universities will provide more opportunities for students to access higher education in their respective districts or locations. Students will not need to travel to far-off places to pursue higher education in government colleges.

Recently, the central government approved setting up of Central University in Andhra Pradesh. The state government of Andhra Pradesh has also initiated the process for commencing the admissions from the academic session 2018-19.

The government needs to come up with more state and central level educational institutes so that students from economically backward classes can get an opportunity to pursue higher education in close proximity.
