What is the theme of the poem sympathy?

Dear Student,

Sympathy is one of Paul Laurence Dunbar's best poems. This lyrical poem uses a caged bird as a metaphor to describe the psychological pain of being trapped. As the bird in the poem makes an effort to break free from its cage, similarly, the poet wishes to be freed from the cage of racism and societal oppression.
