Background of Attempt Limit for NEET UG 2025

To understand the history of the NEET Attempt Limit for a comparative analysis, it is important to be well aware of the background of Attempt Limit for NEET UG 2025. Thus, refer to the following pointers below to understand the gradual evolution of the NEET Attempt Limit:
  • Previously, the NEET UG Exam conducted in the year 2017 had a NEET Attempt Limit of 3. Within this period, if a student had failed to clear the NEET exam even after 3 attempts, they were deemed ineligible for any further NEET exam participation.
  • In addition to this, the NTA had also established an age limit of below 25 years of age for UR students and below 30 years of age for reserved students to be deemed eligible for participation in the NEET exam.
  • NEET Entrance Exam is considered one of the toughest medical entrances to crack across the country as well as abroad. Due to its challenging nature, the restricted NEET attempt limit often faced severe criticisms from students as well as NEET experts over the years.
  • Moreover, the total number of student registrations for the NEET UG Exam witnesses a massive increase with each passing year, marking it difficult to uphold the strict attempt limit for NEET UG entrance.
  • Therefore, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) endorsed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification announcing the withdrawal of the restricted NEET attempt in December 2017.
  • In the year 2018, after the removal of the NEET Attempt Limit, the total number of NEET Attempt Limit was then determined by the upper age limit criterion of the students to participate in the NEET UG Exam.
  • However, later in 2020, the NEET Attempt Limit determined by the upper age limit criterion was also successfully evoked by the NTA, prompting a no-restriction NEET Attempt Limit provision for the upcoming years of NEET UG Entrance Exam.
