Earlier, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) endorsed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notification announcing the withdrawal of the restricted NEET attempt in December 2017.
Previously, each candidate was only allowed to appear for the NEET UG exam thrice. In case a candidate failed to clear the entrance test, they were not allowed to appear for the same again after three NEET attempts. However, due to its challenging nature and increasing number of applicants every year, the NEET exam authorities faced criticisms regarding their strict attempt limit for NEET UG entrance. Therefore, to cater to the demand of the candidates, the maximum number of attempt limit for NEET UG was removed and modified. Thus, this answers the question: how many attempts for NEET?

NEET Attempt Limit 2019
A popular controversy that rose around the NEET Attempt Limit in 2021 was the declared ineligibility of students from open schools to appear in the NEET UG exam. The official notification declared that candidates who passed their Higher Secondary or its equivalent from Open Schooling were not eligible for NEET UG candidature. While the decision was introduced in 2017, this criterion came into action in 2018. As many students were barred from appearing in the NEET UG Exam, this caused a major uproar countrywide. Later, this decision was revoked, and open school students were allowed to appear for the exam from 2019 onwards.
NEET Attempt Limit 2018
The decision to announce an upper age limit for NEET UG exam was first revealed via a Gazette of India notification in January 2018. However, due to the inconvenience caused by the decision, several students started to protest. This, therefore, forced the official authority of MCI to scrap away the age limit criterion within one week of introducing the NEET attempt limit rule. Thus, the only age limit criterion to be followed ever since is that the applying candidate must be at least 17 years of age or above.
NEET Attempt Limit 2017

The upper age limit was set as 25 years of age, while the lower age limit NEET UG attempt limit was the same as 17 years of age. The maximum number of NEET Attempt Limit was decided to be 3 times. Lower
Age
Limit
