Rohit Bal
Rohit Bal, a renowned costume designer is known for designing costumes for the famous game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. Bal frequently collaborates with Khadi Gram Udyog and is considered to be a big name in the fashion industry. Rohit comes under the list of NIFT Delhi Notable Alumni, who belong to a Kashmiri Pandit family from Jammu and Kashmir. Rohit’s family saw a tough time during the 1990 insurgency when his parents had to flee from the valley. However, despite the challenges that came his way, Rohit didn’t let them come in his way. He completed his schooling from DP S Mathura and graduated from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi in History. He then enrolled himself at NIFT Delhi where he studied fashion design.
He began his independent collection with his brother right after graduating from NIFT Delhi. It was only after this that he got a major breakthrough in the industry when Khadi Gram Udyog reached out to him to design their products. From thereafter, Rohit Bal’s career took a leap. He has won many awards which include the Designer of the Year in 2001 and 2004 at the International Fashion Awards and the Indian Fashion Awards (2006). He was also rewarded with the Grand Finale Designer at the Lakme Fashion Week (2012). Currently, he serves major clients like Pamela Anderson, Cindy Crawford, and Uma Tharman.
Iti Tyagi
An internet search describes Iti as a fashion designer and social entrepreneur, however, she encompasses much more than just that. Iti Tyagi is known for bagging the prestigious Nari Shakti Puruskar Award wherein she has worked tirelessly towards issues like women empowerment etc. After completing her design degree from NIFT, Iti went on to pursue a course in interior design at the KLC School of Design in London. Thereon, she worked in various design fields like embroidery, woodwork, metalwork, glassblowing etc. Her designs are heavily inspired by the concept of sustainable development. Tyagi developed and designed the PPE kits during the COVID pandemic to protect the health sector professionals without causing much harm to the environment.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee
Sabyasachi is not an unfamiliar name if you have ever taken interest in the field of fashion design. Sabyasachi Mukherjee is one of the top fashion designers in the country who is known for his extravagant costumes, accessories, jewelry and more. Sabyasachi completed his graduation from NIFT Kolkata and is best known for showcasing Indian heritage through his designs. He bagged a number of job offers after completing his graduation from NIFT, but he refuted them all and started an independent brand of his own. Thereafter, he started to get work from the Bollywood industry, and was even awarded with the National Award for Best Costume Design. Sabyasachi Mukherjee gained much influence over the industry after his work in the movie Black, was taken in by the audiences. Also, Sabyasachi is one of the few designers who got an opportunity to display his work at the New York Fashion Week.
Nikita Anand
Nikita Anand is one of the most sought after NIFT Delhi Alumni who made a mark in the fashion industry by becoming an actress, TV Host, model and a beauty pageant winner as well. Nikita was born in Jalandhar and her father was an Army Doctor which led her to explore different places at a very young age. Thus, Nikita was exposed to different cultures and settings from a quite tender age. Nikita Anand was also crowned as the Miss India Universe (2003). She made her Bollywood debut from the film, Dil Dosti Etc. and another movie that she is known for is “Ek Second…Jo Zindagi Badal De”.
Manish Arora
Manish Arora completed his graduation from NIFT Delhi and is known to be a major trendsetter in the fashion industry. Many people have called his designs timeless and translatable as well. Arora made his first appearance in the design industry when he participated in the Indian Fashion Week Mumbai in 2002. Manish then made an appearance at the London Fashion Week (2005) and went on to perform a catwalk show at the Paris Fashion Week (2007). By this time, he had started collaborating with big brands like Reebok, Amrapali, MAC etc. Manish Arora’s name in the industry has now fizzled out due to certain setbacks that he received in 2020. Devoleena Bhattacharjee
