The PMT and NEET are the entrance exams that are conducted to grant medical admission in India. However, the PMT Exam has been scrapped since 2017. Since then, the NEET Exam has become the single entrance exam for UG medical studies.
PMT and NEET differences

The main difference between PMT and NEET is that PMT has been scrapped and NEET has become the only entrance exam for MBBS admission in India. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) replaced the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) in 2017. From 2018, the NEET 2025 Exam has become the only entrance test for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses. All the affiliated colleges and universities do not have permission to conduct any other separate exams for UG medical admission.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been given the responsibility by the Supreme Court of India to conduct the NEET exam annually. While understanding the PMT vs NEET, students must note that the NEET is conducted for every student while the PMT Exam was primarily designed for CBSE students. PMT was conducted for 15% of total medical seats, while NEET is conducted to grant admission in 100% of medical seats in India. It is also important to note that the PMT Exam was not conducted for candidates from Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Andhra Pradesh. As per the statistics of 2016, almost 3 lakh students applied for the PMT exam. While in 2024, almost 24 lakh students applied for the NEET Exam. Read the article below to learn more about the differences between PMT and NEET.

Highlights of PMT Vs NEET

One of the major PMT and NEET differences is that the PMT Exam was designed only for CBSE students, while the NEET exam is attended by every candidate irrespective of the board. The APMT Exam was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), while the NEET Exam is arranged by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Here are more differences between PMT and NEET.

Difference Between PMT and NEET

There are several differences between PMT and NEET exams. A few of them are mentioned below:

PMT vs NEET: Application Process

There are major differences between PMT and NEET exams in the registration process. The PMT or APMT exam application form was published by the respective state authority. On the other hand, the registration process for the NEET exam is conducted by NTA. Only one application per student is accepted by the NTA at the national level.

PMT vs NEET: Eligibility Criteria

The Difference between PMT and NEET can also be seen in the eligibility criteria for the two exams. There is no set form of guidelines regarding the eligibility requirement for the PMT examination. On the other hand, the NEET 2025 Eligibility Criteria is specified by NTA in the exam brochure. These eligibility criteria are common for students all over India.

PMT vs NEET: Exam Pattern

The PMT and NEET differences can also be noticed in the exam pattern of the two exams. The PMT Exam had two stages - preliminary and main exams. The preliminary paper of the APMT exam contained objective questions, while the main paper had subjective questions. On the other hand, the NEET 2025 Exam Pattern suggests that there will be a single paper for the test. The total marks of the NEET test is 720. A total of 200 multiple-choice questions are asked in the NEET question paper.

In conclusion, there are major differences between PMT and NEET Exams. The PMT Exam was conducted at the state level till the academic year 2016. On the other hand, the NEET Exam is conducted at the national level. Only CBSE students were eligible for the PMT Exam, unlike the NEET Exam.
