History of UGC

The history of UGC can be traced back to 1945 when it was established by the UGC Commission. At first, UGC had the provision to supervise the educational duties and operations of 3 major colleges namely the University of Delhi, the University of Banaras, and the University of Aligarh. By 1947, the UGC proved to be a very successful mission and thus almost all major colleges were regulated by UGC. During 1948-49, the University Education Commission was created under the chairmanship of S.Radhakrishan. Some modifications and amendments were made and thus the committee was further improvised. Finally, the UGC that functions to date, was launched on December 28, 1953 by Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad with the majority of the colleges under its regulation.
