Admissions to the various Horticulture courses at both the UG and PG levels are done as per the criteria and regulations of the different colleges that offer the programmes. Given below is the information about the eligibility criteria, application and selection process.

Horticulture, in layman’s terms, basically means the art and craft of dealing with any kind of plant. The term horticulture, which has been derived from the Latin words “Hortus” and “Cultus” translates to Garden Cultivation. Therefore, a horticulture course involves teaching students about the art, science as well as technology behind plant life and conservation, restoration as well as maintenance.

Students will be able to pursue programmes in horticulture both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They can take up horticulture as a B.Sc, B.Tech or M.Sc degree. Some institutes and colleges also offer students a Diploma in Horticulture. Horticulturalists can get jobs in various sectors and the field opens up a multitude of options. However, since the course of horticulture is offered in the Science and Engineering streams, the course will only be applicable to students who have studied Science in class 12th.

Many colleges in India offer agriculture courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. All these agriculture courses also provide the students with various courses and topics of horticulture, however, if you are an enthusiast, you may want to consider pursuing one of the horticulture focused courses. To pursue a course from Horticulture Colleges , especially in Tamil Nadu, candidates have to appear for an entrance test, commonly known as HORTICET or Horticulture Common Entrance Test. This article takes a look at the entire horticulture admission process including details about the eligibility criteria, application and selection process.

List of Horticulture Courses 2022

There are three major Horticulture courses in India that you can find in any one of the colleges or institutes that specialise in the field of Agriculture or Horticulture. Here is a list of Horticulture courses in India that you will be able to pursue as a part of your higher education programmes:

Along with these degree courses, some colleges also offer the students the option of pursuing Doctoral programmes as well. The admission to which will be done if the interested candidates have a valid Postgraduate degree in the specific course.

Horticulture Courses Eligibility Criteria 2022

To be able to pursue one of the horticulture programmes that are available in the horticulture college in India, you will need to meet the eligibility criteria for horticulture courses in India. However, each horticulture college will set its own eligibility criteria. Nonetheless, the basic eligibility criteria for each of the courses will be similar to a certain extent. Admission to the horticulture programmes offered by the various colleges will also depend on the level of the degree that a candidate wishes to pursue. For example, the eligibility criteria for B.Tech Horticulture and B.Sc Horticulture, even though will be similar, can differ in certain scenarios. In the same manner, the eligibility for admission to the undergraduate programmes in horticulture will be different from the eligibility criteria for the postgraduate horticulture programmes in India.

B.Tech and B.Sc Horticulture Eligibility Criteria

The B.Tech and B.Sc Horticulture eligibility criteria require the candidates to have satisfied the following conditions:

  • The aspirant should have passed the class 12th board examination.

  • However, the minimum aggregate marks that will be required by the candidates will differ from college to college. Therefore, you are advised to check the eligibility criteria for B.Tech and B.Sc horticulture of the specific college you wish to join.

M.Sc Horticulture Eligibility Criteria

There are many postgraduate programmes in horticulture that you will be able to pursue from one of the horticulture colleges in India. Here is the detailed eligibility criteria:

  • The general M.Sc Horticulture eligibility criteria will be similar for such colleges and it requires the candidates to have a valid undergraduate degree.

  • Depending on the programme offered by the college, the candidates will need to ensure that they have obtained the undergraduate degree in the subject or course that is relevant to M.Sc Horticulture in India.

  • However, like the undergraduate programmes, there will be a minimum aggregate mark that will be needed to be eligible for the programme. The requirement of the minimum aggregate marks will differ from subject to subject and college to college. Therefore, those who wish to take admission, are advised to go through the eligibility criteria for M.Sc Horticulture for the particular college that they wish to pursue the programme.

Diploma in Horticulture Eligibility Criteria

The aspiring candidates who wish to pursue a programme in horticulture but do not wish to pursue the course for the entire duration of one of the full-fledged programmes will be able to pursue a diploma programme, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The candidates will, however, be required to meet the following Diploma in Horticulture eligibility criteria:

  • Since this is a diploma programme, the eligibility, as well as the duration of the course, will differ for various colleges.

  • However, the minimum requirement for Diploma in Horticulture in India is to either have passed the class 10th or class 12th board examination.

  • The interested candidates will need to check out the eligibility criteria for Diploma in Horticulture for the particular college that they wish to pursue their higher education programme.

Horticulture Courses Application Process 2022

There is no set procedure to fill out the application form for horticulture courses. Candidates willing to apply for Horticulture admission have to visit the official website of the desired institute offering the course. They need to check their respective eligibility criteria and only proceed with the registration process if they meet the same. The application form will be either made available in online mode, offline mode or both.

Aspirants just need to enter all the valid details, upload/ attach the required documents and pay the application fee before the registration deadline expires. The registration of the aspirant will only be considered successful after the conducting body has received the application fee.

Admission and Selection Process for Horticulture Courses 2022

The admission process for the different horticulture programmes will differ firstly from college to college and then from degree to degree. The candidates who are interested in pursuing an undergraduate programme in horticulture are given admissions on the basis of merit. The merit of the candidates is evaluated either by their performance in the qualifying examinations or through their performance in an entrance test that is either conducted at the state or University/ College level. Before applying for the programme, the candidates are advised to go through all the requirements of the college for the mentioned programmes.

The candidates from the state of Andhra Pradesh who wish to apply for admission to the programmes in Horticulture will be able to do so by appearing for HORTICET, which is a common entrance test that has been specifically designed for horticulture programme admissions.

As far as the selection process for the horticulture courses is concerned, every college will have its own set of selection criteria. However, the selection process for the programme will depend on the performance of the candidates in either the qualifying or entrance examinations. Depending on the college, the candidates will also be asked to appear for a Personal Interview round or Group Discussion, where the overall performance of the candidates will be considered as the basis for admission to the different programmes.
