What is NID DAT Entrance Exam?

The National Institute of Design Aptitude Test, popularly known as NID DAT, is an entrance test administered by the National Institute of Design (NID) for admission to undergraduate (B.Des) and postgraduate (M.Des). The test is divided into two parts: DAT Prelims and DAT Mains.

The DAT Prelims is a paper-and-pencil screening examination. It assesses the candidate's design aptitude, including their comprehension of design ideas and principles, their ability to interpret and analyse visual data, and their inventiveness. The NID DAT Prelims is a qualifying test and only individuals who score higher than the cut-off are allowed to take the NID DAT Mains.

The NID DAT Mains is a more extensive exam that is administered on a computer. It assesses the candidate's design knowledge, ability to use design concepts to solve design challenges, and communication abilities. The DAT Mains is a tough test, with only a small number of applicants admitted to NID programmes.

FAQs about NID DAT

Is admission to GDPD provided through NID DAT?

No, admission to GDPD was provided through NID DAT. However, the Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD) course was discontinued in 2023. The seats that were previously available for GDPD courses have now been converted into BDes degree programmes. The NID DAT is now only used for admission to undergraduate design programs at NID. If you are interested in pursuing a design education at NID, you will need to apply for one of the BDes programs.

Does NID DAT have a tie-breaker policy?

Yes. NID DAT employs a tie-breaker policy for candidates with identical total marks. The policy follows this sequence:
- Studio test marks: Higher marks in the studio test result in a higher rank.
- Written test marks: If the tie persists, higher written test marks determine the rank.
- Date of birth: In case of continued tie, an earlier date of birth secures a higher rank.

This policy guarantees fairness in candidate treatment, ensuring admission goes to the most deserving candidates at NID.

NID DAT is conducted in an online or offline mode?

The NID DAT is conducted in a combination of online and offline modes. The NID DAT Prelims is conducted in a pen-and-paper mode, while the NID DAT Mains is conducted in a hybrid mode (online and offline). The studio test, which is part of the NID DAT Mains, is conducted offline at the NID campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Gandhinagar.

The NID DAT evaluates your design aptitude, creativity, problem-solving skills, and observational skills. It is a two-stage exam, with the prelims conducted in pen-and-paper mode and the mains conducted in a hybrid mode (online and offline). The prelims assess your general aptitude for design, while the mains assess your ability to think creatively, solve problems, and observe and interpret information.

How many attempts can I make for NID DAT?

However, it is important to note that the competition for admission to NID is very high, and your chances of getting in will increase with each attempt as you will have more time to prepare.

What is NID DAT Mains?

NID DAT Mains is conducted after the result of NID DAT Prelims is out. Only students who have qualified the NID DAT Prelims can sit for the exam. Candidates are analysed as per their material handling aptitude. The knowledge of the design discipline for which they have applied for admission is also measured.
