CBSE Class 10 Passing Criteria 2025

The Central Board of Secondary Education has published an updated CBSE 10th Result 2025 Passing Marks criteria through an official notification:

  • You will be eligible to get the passing certificate only if you get a grade higher than “E” in all subjects of internal assessments.
  • You must score at least 33% marks in all five subjects of the external exams to pass.
  • You must get the minimum passing marks combined in theory and practicals to pass.
  • No overall division, distinction, or percentage will be awarded to the students.
  • If you are offering a language as an additional subject, then it may replace a language if you fail to secure the minimum passing marks in that language however, you must still have English or Hindi as one of your languages.

    CBSE Class 10 Compartmental Criteria 2025

    You can check the compartmental criteria from the pointers given below to appear for the compartment exams:

    • The compartment exams will be conducted in July or August.
    • You can either apply for compartmental exams or appear for a 2nd chance in the next year's main exams or avail a third chance in the next year's compartmental exams.
    • You have to pass the compartment exams to be declared eligible for class 11.
    • You can either appear for the practical exams or retain your previous marks.
    • The syllabus for the compartment exam will be the same as that of the main exams.
    • A candidate placed in a compartment shall be allowed to appear only in those subjects in which he/she has been placed in a compartment at the Second Chance Compartmental Examination to be held in March/April next year.
    • If you have passed the practical work, then you can only appear for the theory paper.
    • In case a candidate has failed in practical, he/she shall have to appear in theory and practical both, irrespective of the fact that he/she has already cleared the theory examination.
    • The candidate who is placed in the Compartment in the Secondary School Examination (Class-X) shall be admitted provisionally to class XI till he takes in first Chance Compartmental Examination to be held in July/August of that year. His/her admission shall be treated as cancelled if he/she fails to pass the first chance Compartmental Examination.

    CBSE Class 10 New Marking Scheme 2026

    The Central Board of Secondary Education has made a few changes in the marking scheme for the academic year 2026. The following guidelines are issued by CBSE for the board exams next year:

    • Board exams will be conducted twice in one academic year starting from 2026.
    • The syllabus and exam pattern will remain the same.
    • The examination centres will be fixed for the 1st examination, and for the 2nd examination too, the same centres shall be allotted.
    • The second exam will also act as a supplementary exam.
    • No special examination will be conducted under any circumstances.
    • No passing document will be issued after the results of the 1st examinations.
    • The performance of 1st examination will be made available in DigiLocker. This could be used for admission to class XI if the student does not wish to appear in 2nd examination.
    • Students will be issued the original passing documents only after the release of the second exam result.
    • Practical and internal assessments will be done only once.
    • Mark Sheet cum Passing Certificate will have marks secured in the first examination, the second examination, marks secured in the Practical/Internal assessment, and Grades.
    • Students have the option to retain the scores of the exam in which they performed the best.
    • Students who do not get the minimum CBSE 10th Theory and Practical Marks in the first exam will be allowed admission in class 11 based on the result of the second exam.
    • A merit certificate will be issued after 2nd examination.
    • You must get minimum of CBSE 10th Theory and Practical Marks in all the subjects to be declared “Pass”.
    • Students who failed to pass 1 to 5 subjects in the 1st examination will be placed under the “Improvement Category” and will be allowed to appear in the 2nd examination.
    • If a student is declared to pass by replacing the 6th/7th subject will be eligible for improvement in the failed subject only for the next two examinations from their 1st examinations.
    • Students who appeared only in the second exam will be allowed to appear in the first exam of the subsequent year, but the syllabus will be subject to change according to the changes made by CBSE in that year.

    You are required to score CBSE 10th Theory and Practical Marks in every subject of the curriculum to be promoted to class 11th. Since the new marking scheme will be in work from the next academic year, make sure to carefully understand the scheme of studies with the help of your teachers and appear for the subjects accordingly.

    Does CBSE follow the best-of-five rule?

    The Central Board of Secondary Education does not include any distinction or percentage in the result so it depends upon the students to calculate the overall percentage.

    You are not required to score minimum passing marks separately in both theory and practical papers to pass CBSE 10th. The minimum passing marks are 33% which are to be scored combined in both theory and practical papers for each subject included in the curriculum for CBSE 10th.
