The HVAC full form is Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. It is a set of technologies mainly used to regulate room temperature, humidity and air flow within a specific area. It is designed to provide thermal comfort and purifies indoor air quality. The HVAC system design is based on the matter of mechanical engineering. It is based on the principle of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and transfer of heat. HVAC systems can be implemented for both domestic and commercial buildings. It consists of a central air conditioning, heating and ventilation system.

What is the full form of HVAC?

HVAC full form is Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning. It is the technology used for indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. HVAC is an important part used in the areas of single-family homes, apartment buildings, senior living facilities and hotels, medium to large industrial buildings such as hospitals and skyscrapers, vehicles such as cars, trains, submarines, and ships and in the marine environment where a safe and stable atmosphere is required.

History of HVAC

HVAC is made from a bunch of technologies and applications. It is based upon the inventions of some famous scientists such as Nikolay Lvov, Michael Faraday, Willis Carrier, Reuben Trane, James Joule, William Rankine, Sadi Carnot and many others included.

Multiple inventions during this time span introduced the beginning of the first confer air conditioning system which was designed in 1902 by Alfred Wolf for the New York Exchange. HVAC training was initially provided by Coyne College in the year 1899.

The creation of the component of the HVAC system went collectively with the Industrial revolution and the new methods of modernization, higher efficiency and system controls are constantly being introduced by companies and inventors throughout the world.

Basic HVAC Parts

HVAC consists of various parts for effective functioning. Few of the parts of HVAC are listed below:

  • Furnace
  • Heat Exchanger
  • Evaporator Coil
  • Condensing Unit
  • Refrigerant Lines
  • Thermostat
  • Ducts
  • Vents

Usage of HVAC

HVAC technology is widely used to create a comfortable and luxurious environment indoors or in vehicles. Its usage is very important in the designing of medium to large size industrial and office buildings. The main example of the implication of this technology is in: Shopping Malls, Business Offices, Hotels, Restaurants, Schools and Colleges, Vehicles etc. It is used to provide a relaxed environment especially in vehicles.

The main usage of HVAC is to provide thermal comfort, proper ventilation to remove unpleasant smell and unnecessarily moisture within the area of its effectiveness. Its operational and maintenance costs are less. The HVAC system consists of a blower unit, a compressor and ancillaries.

The heater is used by the HVAC system to warm the air in the environment. In order to warm the surrounding air, the HVAC system uses the heat derived from the hot water in the cooling system of the engineer. The HVAC system also makes relevant use of an evaporator to cool down the air by the means of evaporation of refrigerant gas. This creates the most desirable cabin temperature as per the operation and working of instrument panel

Another significant function of the air conditioner is defogging the windows and removing the existing moisture in the cabins. To prevent windows from being blurred, modern car’s air conditioners initially cool down the air, a little lower in label than what is set by the user. Later, the temperature is adjusted by the HVAC system by the process of passing cooled air over the heater.

How Does the HVAC System Function?

The primary function of an HVAC system is not just warming or cooling a space. Instead, it functions to improve indoor air quality and provide comfort to everyone inside the building. While there are many different types of HVAC systems, all have the similar purpose.

First, the fresh air is trapped inside from outside or from within the home. This process is known as ‘ventilation’ and it exists in two different ways. Natural ventilation is available almost everywhere and it refers to the air moving typically in and out through windows, doors, vents and other sources. This exchange of air is significant as it is important to replenish oxygen and to remove odors present, carbon dioxide and absorb excess moisture.

Mechanical or forced ventilation is provided by air handlers and used to control the quality of indoor air. Excess humidity, odors and contamination can often also be controlled through the process of dilation or replacement with outside air.

The kitchen and bathrooms usually consist of an electronic exhaust to control odors and levels of humidity. The main factors in the designing of such a system include flow rate and level of noise. Ceiling fans and table doors in summers circulate air within the room to reduce the perceived temperature by increasing the evaporation of sweat from the skin of the occupants. As hot air rises, ceiling fans may be used to keep a room warmer in winter season by circulating the warm stratified air from the ceiling to the air.
