In a multitiered parliamentary democracy like India, a Member of Parliament (MP) plays a critical role. Even members of the ruling party/coalition have specific duties and obligations. MPs are responsible for implementing the laws that  govern our country.

Members of Parliament have the following responsibilities:

  • Legislative Responsibility : Enacting Indian laws in the Lok Sabha.
  • Oversight Responsibility : Entails ensuring that the Executive (i.e., the government) fulfills the responsibilities it has effectively.
  • Representative Responsibility : Representing the ideas and aspirations of their constituents in the Indian Parliament (Lok Sabha).
  • Power of the Purse Responsibility : Approval and oversight of planned government income and expenditures.
  • Electoral Role : An MP is also crucial in the election of a country's President and Vice-President. Lok Sabha MPs can also choose the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House, whilst Rajya Sabha MPs choose the Vice-Chairman of the House.

Eligibility Criteria to Become an MP

  • Candidates must be citizens of India.

  • Candidates must be  25 years old or above.
  • Candidates should be reliable.
  • No candidate may have received a court sentence of two years or more in prison.
  • Candidates must be registered as voters in any Indian parliamentary district.
  • To be nominated, a recognized political party candidate must have one proposer from their district.
  • Candidates running alone must have ten proposers.

The third criterion caused the Representation of the People Act (1951) to introduce further qualifications for MPs. These are the qualifications:

  • A single elector can be selected. As a result, the candidate must be a registered voter in a parliamentary constituency and be entitled to vote.
  • If a person loses the right to vote for whatever reason, he or she also loses the ability to run for public office.A person who is jailed or in legal custody at the time of elections, for example, is ineligible to vote. A person under preventive detention, on the other hand, is permitted to vote. These determine a person's eligibility to seek election as a Member of Parliament.
  • To vote, a person does not have to be a registered voter in the same constituency. This impacts both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
  • A person from a reserved category is only eligible to run for office if a Lok Sabha seat is reserved for them. A SC/ST candidate may contest for an unreserved seat.

Salary of an MP in India

Members of Parliament in India are paid around 2.7 lakh rupees per month, which includes the pension paid to ex-MPs. The Member of Parliament Act of 1954 governs all MP pensions and monthly payments. The act is in conformity with constitutional requirements that members of either House of Parliament be paid salaries and allowances on a regular basis. The regulations governing salaries, allowances, and perks such as housing, telephone access, daily allowance, and so on are overseen by a joint committee of both chambers.
