What is the History of CAPF?

  • The Central Armed Police Force (CAPF full form) originated during British rule. 
  • After independence, the forces made by the British were merged which formed BSF which is part of CAPF.
  • During 1968 Indian Govt. formed one more group known as CPRF, which is also part of CAPF.

  1. Border Security Force (BSF)

BSF established in 1965, is a group among CRPF and is responsible for protecting the borders of India from external threats and they prevent the illegal movement of goods and services.

  1. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

CRPF is recognised as the largest paramilitary force which comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs and was established in the year 1939.

  1. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

The force was established in 1969 and is responsible for protecting public organizations and government buildings which includes airports, seaports, etc

  1. Indo- Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

It was established in the year 1962 to protect and guard Indo Tibetan border

  1. National Security Guard (NSG)

The NSG was formed in the year 1984 and is responsible for protecting and fighting terrorism and other threats. The group is trained to counter-terrorism, rescue hostage and protect VIPs 

  1. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

It was formed in the year 1963 by the name of Special Service Bureau and later was renamed as Sashastra Seema Bal in the year 2001. They are formed to protect and guard Nepal & Bhutan borders.

Why was CAPF Formed? 

The CAPF, full form of which is Central Armed Police Force, was formed to provide Union Govt. with specially and trained police personnel who could be placed across India to maintain law and order. They are posted during Internal security threats, natural disasters, communal riots, borders, providing protection to VIPs and much more.

What is the Selection Process for CAPF?

CAPF acts as the most resilient and brave security personnel so, its recruitment is conducted by strictly maintaining certain qualifying parameters. UPSC conducts recruitment examinations to hire these officers. The candidates applying through UPSC have to undergo four significant phases which will be discussed below:

  • Written examination

The first phase in UPSC CAPF recruitment is a written examination. Candidates need to send an online application to participate in the test. Candidates need to prepare topics on general awareness, logical reasoning, math, English language and general studies. There will be two papers in CAPF; the first will be objective while the second one is descriptive in nature.

  • Physical Efficiency Test 

Candidates, after qualifying the written test, have to undergo a physical standard test. AS CAPF personnel need to possess great physical prowess, physical activities like jumping, running, throwing etc. will be organised at this stage of the selection process.

  • Medical Test

This is another crucial stage involved in the CAPF selection process. Those who have qualified for the PET are not only allowed to take part in the medical test. In this test, candidates will be examined and judged based on their mental and physical fitness.

  • Interview

This is the last and final round whereby candidates are assessed on their personality, interpersonal skills and presence of mind. A panel of senior officers will take the interview, and the final selection will be based on scores obtained by candidates in each of the four stages.
