The full form of HM is Hindustan Motors, a vehicle manufacturing company operating at Port Okhra, Gujarat in pre-independent India; however, it shifted to Utarpara, Kolkata in 1948. This leading car manufacturer reportedly relied on government patronage to survive the cutthroat competition in the market. It had once collaborated with Mitsubishi leading to the production of Pajero and Lancer. Under the flagship of Birla Industrial Group, HM became the best-selling model in India, and their venture was supported by Morris Motors. Besides winning the hearts of car lovers with Ambassador, the company sold two other popular models, which include Deluxe and Contessa.

The legacy of India’s top car manufacturers can be traced back to pre-independent India. Hindustan Motors Limited initially operated under the flagship of CK Birla and worked in collaboration with Lord Nuffield at a small production plant nestled in Gujarat. 

This company was founded with the primary objective of minimising transportation costs as motor parts were transported from foreign companies. Well, this objective somehow encouraged the vehicle company to choose a cheaper location i.e. Uttarpara, West Bengal. This decision proved fruitful for the company’s long-term growth and success as India’s leading car manufacturing conglomerate. 

The first known model manufactured at the Kolkata production unit was Hindustan 10, inspired by Morris Oxford MO, and baby Hindustan. From 1954 onwards, a series of models were launched; the most notable models include Hindustan Landmaster followed by the remarkable Hindustan Ambassador both are modelled on Morris Oxford Series II & III. Well, as new motor companies like Maruti entered the industry, HM’s fame got overshadowed.
