MCI Full Form

MCI full form is the Medical Council of India. The council was recognized as a statutory body that helps in establishing standards of medical education till 25 September 2020. But on the same date, the Medical Council of India was replaced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) which is responsible for providing medical qualifications, accreditation to medical institutions, registering medical practitioners, and monitoring medical practice in India.

What is the full form of MCI?

As mentioned above the full form of MCI is the Medical Council Of India. The MCI was in charge of developing and establishing high standards in the medical sector which was made under the Indian medical council Act of 1933 and the council was established in the year 1934. In the year 2019, NITI Aayog made a recommendation to replace MCI with the National Medical Commission or NMC. On 8 August the bill for replacing MCI was passed by parliament and was also approved by the President Of India. On 25th September 2020, the MCI was dissolved and replaced by the National Medical Commission. 

History of MCI

  • The Medical Council of India was established in the year 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act of 1933
  • Later the council came under the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956
  • The council faced much criticism regarding corruption 
  • In the year 2001, the president of MCI Ketan Desai was arrested in a case of corruption & abuse of power 
  • In the year 2010, the MCI was dissolved by the President of India which also included the arrest of Desai by the CBI regarding corruption 
  • In May 2011 the MCI was entrusted to the Board of Governors
  • On 6th November 2013, the MCI was again reconstituted 

What is the vision & mission of NMC?

The NMC has some goals and vision which are mentioned below 

  • Providing high-quality education at a low cost 
  •  Ensure the availability of trained medical professionals all over India 
  • To promote healthcare and encourage people about community health 
  • To develop an interest in medical research
  • To implement policies and standards in medical education
  • Monitoring the functioning of medical centers
  • To implement new rules and codes for the medical field 

What are the objectives of MCI or NMC? 

The main objective of MCI was to establish universal criteria for UG and PG medical institutions, making recommendations for accepting medical degrees provided by a medical institution in India or abroad. In order to register professionals or doctors on a permanent or provisional basis.

Which documents are required for getting an MCI certificate? 

Below mentioned are the documents which are required for getting an MCI certificate:

  • Original Passport along with 3 copies 
  • Original Identity verification with self-attested copies
  • Passport size photos
  • 10th and 12th mark sheet original and self-attested copies
  • 10th and 12th original Transfer or migration certification along with self-attested copies  
  • 10th and 12th transcribes of the grade's original and self-attested copies 
  • Original application form
  • SC/ST or OBC certificate original with self-attested copies (if Applicable)

About the Medical Council of India (MCI)

After the announcement of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the National Medical Commission took the role of MCI. During the year 2018, the government dissolved MCI and replaced the whole system with a Board of Governors which is headed by members of NITI Aayog. On 8th August 2019 National Commission Act came into power and replaced the IMC Act. Now NMC is recognized as the sole regulatory body for medical education in India. 

About the National Medical Commission Bill of 2019

The NMC bill was presented by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare during the Lok Sabha session by Dr. Harsha Vardhan on 22nd July 2019. Later the bill was passed in lok sabha on 29th July 2019 and in the August month, it was also cleared by Rajya Sabha. Which provides setting up a new regulatory body named as National Medical Commission (NMC). 

What are the objectives of the NMC Bill?

  • To make sure there are enough medical professionals 
  • Monitor the standards of medical institutions 
  • For monitoring that medical professionals must give importance to research in the field of medical 

How many Members are included in NMC?

  • The NMC will consist of a chairperson, Presidents of PG Medical Education Boards, and UG education board 
  • The MNC will include of total 25 members which will be finalized by the Ministry of Health
  • Director General of ICMR
  • Director General of Health Services 

How many Boards does NMC consist of?

The NMC is divided into four boards. The names of the boards are mentioned below:

  •  Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB)
  • Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB)
  • Medical Assessment & Rating Board
  • Ethics & Medical Registration Board 

What are the functions of NMC?

Mentioned below are the functions of NMC: 

  • Regular monitoring of institutions and professionals
  • State Medical Council has to follow council guidelines 
  • Fixes the fee payment on 50% of seats in private and deemed universities offering medical courses
