MRO's full form is Maintenance, Repair, and Operations. The term refers to the equipment, tools and activities involved in the day-to-day operations of the business but MRO doesn't include materials, equipment, and services that are used directly in production. MRO also means requirements that companies buy to ensure all the operations will run smoothly without any problem which results in making companies work finish nicely.

For example, a hotel might have preventative maintenance to ensure that rooms are checked and cleaned regularly. When a guest reports a problem with the room, such as a drain, the maintenance team will repair or replace the damaged item. The hotel will also have plans to repair and maintain the building's HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Transportation: MRO plays a critical role in maintaining the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment in the transportation industry. For example, a shipping company might have preventative maintenance to ensure their trucks are regularly inspected and repaired. It also includes changing the oil, checking the brakes and turning the tires. When a car breaks down, maintenance crews must repair or replace parts to get the car back on the road.

  • Improves efficiency: A computerized management system (CMMS)  helps organisations to monitor and manage maintenance schedules, inventory levels, and repair and replacement costs. It ensures improvement in efficiency and also makes sure that all maintenance and repair are done timely.

Disadvantages of MRO

  • High Cost: Especially for organizations that require huge amounts of equipment or facilities, the cost of regular maintenance and repairs can increase.
  • Time taking: While preventive maintenance helps in minimizing the time duration but some time increases may occur when equipment or facilities are repaired or replaced. 
  • Human error:  As you all know Maintenance and repair is a complex task and mistakes can be made if workers are not properly trained and equipped.
  • Inconvenience: Maintaining and repairing can be challenging for organizations as they require employees to take time off from their daily work to perform maintenance or repairs. 

What is the Current Situation of MRO

Currently, around 90% of the needs of the MRO sector, full form of which is Maintenance, Repair, and Operations, in India are met by imports from other countries. The domestic MRO industry in India is evolving but it has potential for growth. Economic growth will be fueled by India's growing aviation industry (which could create employment for around 90,000 people and save up to $2 billion in foreign currency savings). In terms of scale and scope of certification services, the domestic MRO industry may continue to rely on foreign MROs until domestic competitors catch up.
