What is NSO full form?

As mentioned above the full form of NSO is National Statistical Office which was created by merging National Sample Survey office (NSSO) and Central Statistical Office (CSO). On 23rd May 2019, Govt. of India approved the merger. NSSO was recognized as the largest organization which was responsible for conducting socio-economic surveys on a periodic basis. The NSO has to manage statistical activities of the central and state government agencies established by National Statistical Commission (NSC)

Responsibilities of NSO  

National Statistical Office has some responsibilities which are mentioned below:

·       To manage the statistical work of ministries and departments of central govt. of republic of India and SSB

·       Gives advice to ministries and departments of Govt regarding statistical data analysis and methodologies.

·       Helping to establish and execute standards and procedures related to statistical.

·       It is also responsible for collection of data, processing of data .

·       Preparation and maintaining national accounts

·       Publishing yearly estimates regarding Govt. expenditure/spend, Govt. savings formation of capital and more

·       To maintain good relationships with foreign organizations such as FAO, ESCAP, ADB, UNSD, IMF, ILO etc

·       Compiling, preparing and announcing IIP every month   

·       Conducting Annual survey of industries to provide data related to growth in manufacturing sector.

How was NSO formed?

The National Statistical office is a merger of National Sample Survey office (NSSO) which was under the direct control of the Ministry of Statistics of Govt of India till 2019 and Central Statistics office which was merged with NSSO on 23rd May 2019. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) heads NSO.

The national Sample Survey Office was established in the year 1950 with the motive to conduct large scale surveys across India. NSSO staff were shortlisted from Indian Statistical Service which was appointed through UPSC and Subordinate Statistical Service appointed by the staff selection commission.

Composition of NSO

As per the recent order, there will be three Director Generals namely DG (Statistics), DG (Coordination, Administration and Policy) and DG (National Sample Survey). They will be reporting to the Secretary (S&PI) as against DG (Economic Statistics), DG (Social Statistics) and DG (Surveys) earlier.

The Field Operations Division, written as FOD of the present NSSO will be a subordinate office of the MoSPI and all the other divisions of present CSO, NSSO and the administrative wing will persist as divisions of MoSPI. As per the order, the Ministry has also ordered constitution of a committee to recommend the operational level modifications required to give effect to this restructuring.

The order explains that the proposed NSO would be headed by the Secretary of Statistics and Programme Implementation, but have no mention of NSC, which has been the overseeing and administering body for all the statistical work carried out in the country. With the revamp order system, the composition of the NSO is re-arranged to carry out and administer different aspect of work effectively.

Aim of 2005 Resolution

The 2005 resolution order aims to streamline and strengthen the present nodal functions of the ministry and the main purpose is to bring in more synergy by integrating its administrative functions within the ministry.

Also, this will help in meeting the requirement of the statistical system as a lack of control and coordination on these two bodies was one challenge in the current system.

The resolution will align India’s statistical system with other countries. A Data Quality Assurance Division has also been set up, replacing the older Data Processing Division, which will have the responsibility to bring about improvements in survey and administrative databases by conducting in-depth research. This division will be strengthened through the process of re-skilling and deployment of existing personnel.

Roles of Various NSSO Division

1. Field Operation Division: Their job is to collect primary data of the surveys taken by NSSO
2. Survey Design & Research Division:  It includes survey’s technical planning, designing, Analyzing and presenting survey results.
3. Coordination & Publication division: Coordinating with multiple departments and divisions of NSSO. Publishing annual journals  
4. Data Processing Division: Selection of samples, developing software, processing, validation and tabular presentation of survey data

Other Full forms for NSO

1.       National Science Olympiad

It is organized by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) every year. The olympiad is conducted for classes 1 to 12 grade and the examination consists of 2 levelsThe National Education Policy helps in promotion of Olympiads as it helps in developing abilities like Problem solving, reasoning and critical thinking among Students. As per SOF, every year around millions of students give NSO.

The NSO exam 1 for 2023 will be conducted on 17 October 2023, 2 exam will be on 21 November 2023 and the last examination will be conducted on 5 December 2023. The students also receive awards for clearing the exams like receiving INR 50,000, gold medal and Performance certificate.

NSO registration is done at schools only. SOF has also announced  last dates for applying in NSO. 

• Exam 1 - 2nd October 2023
• Exam 2 - 6th October 2023
• Exam 3 - 21st November 2023

Eligibility criteria for NSO

Eligibility criteria for level 1 Exam

There is no eligibility criteria as Exam 1 is open for all students from classes 1 to 10 can register themselves.

Eligibility criteria for level 2 exam

Students clearing level 1 with good scores are shortlisted for level 2. The eligibility criteria for level 2 is

• Top 5 percent of students from each class who has achieved good marks in level 1
• Top 25 students zone wise from each class

How to apply for NSO (Through School)?

By following below steps students from classes 1 to 12 can apply for NSO 2023-24 exams

1. SOF will be sending forms at schools which are registered with them
2. Students can take forms can fill it 
3. Fill all the required details carefully 
4. Submit it back to school for further process

How to apply for NSO (Online)?

Students and Schools  can go through below mentioned steps for registering themselves at SOF.

2. Click on Online Registration for schools and students 
3. Two options will be displayed 1 for the school registration and the other for student registration.
4. Fill all the required details correctly
5. Pay registration fee amount
6. Submit the form 

Registration fee structure of NSO

As per regulations, INR 125 per student is the registration fee for NSO.

When results are announced? 

Usually results are announced within 8 weeks of examination. Schools registered with SOF receive results directly. The results are also announced on the official website. Therefore, there are two ways to check the results.

NSO Exam Pattern

The examination for level 1 is conducted at respective schools of participants.

• The examination consist of 35 Multiple Choice Questions for classes 1 to 4 
• The examination consist of 50 Multiple Choice Question for classes 5 to 12
• The paper includes 3 sections 

For classes 1 to 10 it has questions based on Logical reasoning, Achievers section and Science.

For Classes 11 and 12 it consists of questions based on Chemistry/physics, Biology/Mathematics and the section for achiever remains common in both.

• The test medium is English
