Overview of the Development of ONGC Over the Years

Assam Oil company in the northeastern part and Attock oil in the northwest were the only crude oil producers in pre-independent India. In 1948, the government felt the need for oil and gas production to support economic development, due to this decision, the Economic Policy Statement was drafted in 1948. 

In 1955 the Ministry of Natural Resources and Scientific Research formed the Oil & Natural Gas Directorate to exploit natural gas and crude oil reserves. Under the leadership of Mr KD Malviya, the mission to study the oil sector began, to effectively achieve objectives, training was conducted to explore gas and oil reserves. 

Finally, assistance from soviet specialists helped to develop a 2nd five-year plan to conduct geophysical and geological investigations.
