The SSP full form is Senior Superintendent of Police,who is posted in all the districts of India irrespective of whether they are urban, densely populated or Naxal-affected. They are bestowed with the duty of upholding law and order in their area as the position of SSP falls within the senior tier under the Indian Police Service (IPS) pay Rules. It becomes the primary duty of SSP to look after the peace and administration of the district to manage the state of stability in everyday life.

What is the full form of SSP?

The full form of SSP is the Senior Superintendent of Police. The SSP of the given area helps and administers the law and order of the area. The SP (Superintendent of Police) reports to the SSP of the area in case of any chaos and instability. All the junior police officers are required to report to the SSP in case of given responsibility. The right to life, liberty and property are the basic rights that the citizens are entitled to. With this, the demand for the right to equal opportunities and equality before the law becomes the necessary demand. The larger districts are headed by SSP.

How to Become an SSP?

As per the rules and guidelines, there are no direct exams for becoming an SSP. The eligible candidates can appear for UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Exam. Upon passing all the three stages of the UPSC exam (prelims, mains and interview), the candidates according to the ‘service preference allocation’ are posted in the rank of Assistant Commandant of Police (ACP) or the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). After allocating the position and considering the work experience and performance, the rank of SSP is allocated. Basically, the rank of SSP is allocated on the basis of promotion and no direct examination is conducted for the same.

Eligibility Criteria to Become an SSP

There lies few eligibility criteria, which the candidates before receiving the position of SSP need to fulfill. The basic eligibility criteria for becoming an SSP are:

  • To become an SSP, the candidate must have passed 12th from a recognized board with 50% aggregate marks.
  • The candidates must have passed graduation from a recognized board/university.
  • The candidate must have citizenship of India.
  • Height should be a hundred sixty five cm for male candidates and one hundred fifty cm for women candidates.
  • The chest should be eighty to 50 cm for male candidates and no restriction has been applied for women candidates.

SSP Exam Pattern

As discussed above, the candidates can become SSP after clearing the UPSC exam and there is no prescribed examination conducted for the post of SSP. To clear the UPSC exam, the candidates have to qualify three stages: Prelims, Mains, and Interview. The details of the UPSC exam process are given below:

  • PreliminaryExamination: The preliminary exam is the qualifying exam. The candidates have to prepare GS papers alongwith CSAT. After qualifying the UPSC prelims exam, the candidates are eligible to appear for UPSC Mains exam.
  • MainExamination: UPSC Mains exam consists of essay papers and optional subjects. After passing the exam the candidate can appear for an interview.
  • Interview: The interview is the last session of the UPSC exam. The personality test is done in the interview session. The interview questions are based on various subjects including country, politics and current affairs and general knowledge. 

Characteristics of SSP

  • For the position of SSP, there is no direct hiring process or examination conducted. 
  • As a role of SSP, sometimes a small district may be under their control or they may also be in charge of a big rural or metropolitan region in their regime.
  • In India, a Senior Superintendent of Police makes an average income of INR 1,53,441 rupees per month.
  • According to the age limit criteria, the candidate must not be less than 21 years of age and the upper age limit must not be more than 32 years of age.

Functions of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)

  1. It is the duty of SSP to administer and fairly enforce the law as well as to safeguard the public's natural right- i.e  rights to life, liberty and property.
  2. To maintain and retain the public peace and stability in the region.
  3. The SSP is also responsible to safeguard the internal security, to prevent and manage terrorist attacks, racial tensions, militant activity and other circumstances that might jeopardize the internal security.
  4. To defend against the acts of vandalism, violence or any other type of attack or damage of public properties such as roads, railways, bridges, important businesses etc.
  5. The SSP must secure their own ‘preventative action’ and follow the set procedures in order to prevent crimes and decrease the opportunity for them to be committed by imposing strict punishment.
  6. The SSP must properly acknowledge the receipt of any complaints made to them by a complainant or any person in any person via mail, email or any other method and to record all the complaints made to them appropriately.
  7. SSPs are in charge of fostering and upholding a sense of security within the community and look after to minimize the chances of conflict and promote amity among the members.
  8. In times of crisis, the foremost duty of SSPs is to serve as ‘first responders’ and offer as much assistance as possible to those in need when faced with natural or man-made calamities as well as to actively support various organizations or NGOs in their efforts to provide relief and rehabilitation.
  9. The SSP of the area provides help to those who are in danger of physical harm to themselves or their property and to offer help to the individuals in distress and provide the relief they need.
  10. In case of traffic regulation, SSP encourages the efficient circulation of vehicles and people as well as to manage and regulate traffic on roads and highways to avoid congestion.
  11. The SSP should assume control of all unclaimed/undeclared property while serving as a police officer on duty and take the necessary steps to ensure its secure custody and disposal of service.
  12. In case of proper functioning of the bureaucracy, the SSP develops, inspires and protects the welfare of police officers in the system.
  13. The SSP should behave politely and in manner when interacting with members of the public, especially when speaking to ladies, children and senior citizens as a courtesy.

It is a web-based application process where students from different categories such as SC/ST, OBC, minority, and other categories can apply for the scholarship. It is a state-funded SSP scholarship. Eligibility of SSP Scholarship

As per guidelines, the candidates applying for the SSP Scholarship must view and research about the eligibility criteria. Upon fulfilling the eligibility criteria, the candidate must apply for the process. The candidature for the candidates who cannot fulfill the eligibility criteria will be stood canceled. The few eligibility criteria for the SSP Scholarship are as follows:

  • The candidates should be permanent residents of the state of Karnataka
  • The candidate should have secured at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade in the previous qualifying exam
  • Their family income should not exceed INR 2,50,000 per annum to avail this scholarship
  • The candidate should not apply to avail of more than single scholarship
