DM full form is District Magistrate. DM is recognized as a senior / head administrative officer who takes charge of a district in India. How is the DM Selected?

The DM is recognized as the head of district administration and is appointed by the state Govt. and the candidate has to be a senior civil servant or an officer in administrative services. To be selected as District Magistrate a candidate must have served in different positions in state services for a minimum of 10 years or has to be an Indian administrative officer for a minimum of 20 years. The main criteria is that candidates must be a maximum of 32 years and should work anywhere or should not be having any source of income.

Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India

Physical appearance: The candidate has to be fit and meet all the health eligibility as per UPSC. 

What is the Selection Procedure for DM?

Below mentioned are the stages for becoming DM:

  1. Applicationform: Every candidate has to fill out the application form for the civil service examination through the UPSC official website and after that candidates get eligible to give the examination.
  2. Entranceexamination: All the interested candidates have to clear the civil services examination which is managed by UPSC. The entrance examination consists of Prelims and main examinations. Through this, they can be placed at various governmental posts including district magistrate. 
  3. Interview: Candidates after clearing the written test have to appear in the interview round as well, where their knowledge and abilities are tested.
  4. Selection&appointment: On the basis of written and interview scores the candidates are selected and given the job.

What is the Salary Structure of a DM?

The salary of a District Magistrate varies according to the state and experience level. They are paid on the basis of the current pay scale for IAS officers set by Govi. of India.

As per the 7th pay commission, the basic pay is approx INR 56,100 per month. They also get various kinds of allowances which includes dearness allowance, house rent and much more.

The major difference between a District Magistrate and District Commissioner is DM is an Indian administrative service officer whereas a District commissioner is an Indian Civil Service officer.
