Selection Procedure of IG

The IG recruitment process in India is not a direct recruitment post. It requires the competitive examinations conducted by UPSC to be cleared. The complete details of these and other IPS examinations are mentioned below.

  • The candidates are required to appear for written tests followed bypanel interviews. The final selection is subject to merit list according to cut- off marks and physical fitness.
  • Candidates who clear UPSC CS exam get appointed as SP after the training process. The SP is promoted to the position of DIG after a minimum service tenure of fourteen years (which can be variable as per conditions). Following this, the DIG is promoted to the position of IG after a span of service tenure of at least three years.
  • Candidates who clear the SPS exam get appointed as DSP. The DSP is promoted to SP after a minimum service span of ten years (which can be variable as per conditions). Following this, the SP gets promoted to the position of DIG and then IG in the same manner as mentioned above. The promotion is done by scrutinizing the work done by the officer in years.
