UNIX full form is Uniplexed Information Computing System. It was earlier known as an Uniplexed information computing system (UNICS). UNIX is recognised as an operating system which was originated in the year 1969 and is considered a multitasking, multi-user and sophisticated OS which works on multiple platforms such as desktops, laptops, mobile phones and even servers.

What is the Full Form of UNIX?

As mentioned above the full form of UNIX is UNiplexed Information Computing System which was developed in 1960 as UNICS and has been constantly updated and improved. UNIX is very popular among other Multitasking OS. The OS is known as the collection of applications which helps computers to function smoothly without any lags. UNIX OS is popular for providing security, user-friendly, and stability to the users. The operating system can be used for both personal as well as professional. Operating systems like Linux and Mac OS are made on the basis of UNIX

History of UNIX

To get a clear understanding about the evolution of UNIX, the full form of which is Uniplexed information Computing System, it is vital to learn about its history.

  • The development of UNIX was started by Scientists Ken Thomson and Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs.
  • UNIX is considered as most old OS
  • The first version of UNIX was written in PDP-7 low level and in year 1972 it was replaced with C language
  • The first  version of UNIX  was released in the year 1969
  • UNIX Version 4 was released in the year 1973 and was written in c language
  • The OS started to gain popularity by the year 1990
  • Apple developed its own UNIX OS system known as Mac OS in the year 2000

What is the Purpose of UNIX?

The main purpose for using UNIX is the capability of multitasking and storage. The UNIX OS is found in every laptop, desktop and other computing device. It also consists of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which is comparable to Microsoft Windows which provides more flexibility and user-friendly experience along with providing security.

What are the Different Parts of UNIX?

UNIX consists of 3 parts which are mentioned below

  • Program: An OS consists of files and program which helps the device to function smoothly that’s the reason program plays a crucial role in UNIX
  • Shell: It works as a conduit between kernel and user as before using shell the user has to clear the authentication check
  • Kernel: It acts as a head which allocates memory and time to the applications and it also manages the file storage.

What are the Different Types of UNIX?

The Uniplexed Information Computing System (UNIX full form) operating system comes in different versions but they all share many things. Sun Solaris, LINUX and macOS are recognized as the most popular variants of UNIX. Linux offers multiple distributions on both basis free and commercial.

The ISU offers Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to multiple campuses which is a subscription used by students, teachers and other staff members to use devices owned by the institution.

What are the Different Types of Commands in UNIX?

There are a huge number of commands which are used in UNIX. All popular commands are listed below

1. File management commands: Is, cd, pwd, cp, and rm are the commands which are used to create, delete and copy files.

2. Text manipulation commands: cat. Grep, sed, and awk are the commands which are used to edit, search, etc files

3. System management commands: df, du, top, and ps are the commands which are used to manage and configure the system

4. Networking commands: ping, telnet and ftp are the commands used for connecting and communicating.

5. Shell commands: echo, set, and alias are the commands which are used for interacting with OS

6. Programming commands: gcc, make and gdb are the commands which are used to create and run the program on the system

What are the Different Versions of UNIX?

The UNIX has various versions which includes SunOS, Solaris and much more. Below mentioned are some versions of UNIX

  • AT&T: It is a UNIX computer which was developed by Convergent asd the marketing was done by AT&T information systems and it was released on March, 1985
  • Solaris: It is among the list of UNIX OS which is created by Sun Microsystems. In 1982 the first version was launched. Solaris is based on open source. The solaris was originally known as SunOS
  • AIX: Advanced Interactive eXecutive is an example of an OS which is based on UNIX system V and includes features of 4.3BSD. The first version was released in 1986. The AIX is known for their security, scalability and reliability.
  • HP/UX: The OS is managed by HP and is capable for controlling lists for providing access permission to files and is also known for its management of security and flexible memory

What are the Characteristics of UNIX?

The UNIX OS is completely written in HLL which makes it easy to edit, understand and transfer in different devices and more. Below mentioned are the characteristics of UNIX

  • Portable: The OS is written in HLL language which helps to make it easy to read, edit and transfer across different devices.
  • Multitasking: UNIX allows multiple applications to run at the same time which means if a user is focusing on one application others will be working in the background.
  • Pipes and Filters: They help in building complex applications from easy ones
  • Shell: It is a type of interface which helps the user to function in multiple applications with security.
  • Huge Library: It has a sizable library which makes the OS powerful.

What are the Benefits of Using UNIX?

  • Uniplexed Information Computing System (UNIX full form) OS is portable in nature which helps users to run it across different systems
  • This operating system helps in the smooth functioning multiple  without overburdening memory
  • They are capable of handling heavy applications without any lags
  • They offer a hierarchical setup of file system
  • It is a secure OS because of effective authentication system

What are the Disadvantages of Using UNIX?

  • The OS system works on command line orientation which makes it sometimes difficult to use.
  • Documentation is hard for utilities by UNIX
  • Commands include characters  are unusual which makes it difficult for users to decode
  • There are no service centres available for technical support
  • As compared to Windows or Mac, UNIX is more complicated to use
  • It is recommended for users have basic knowledge of computer

What is the Difference Between LINUX & UNIX

LINUX is a type of open source operating system and is supported by multiple computers and software which helps to handle computer resources and allow them to function smoothly whereas on other side UNIX is considered to be powerful and capable of multitasking which works like a bridge between the user & computer.

The LINUX OS was launched in 1991 while Uniplexed information Computing System (UNIX full form) was launched in 1960. Linux offers multiple languages and UNIX only works on the English language. The linux OS supports more applications than UNIX and on the other side UNIX supports less file systems than LINUX.
